Tarangire National Park

This charming quiet park is a hidden jewel, especially when you like to experience an authentic safari in northern Tanzania. Its unique landscape, dotted with thousands of baobabs is spectacular. The park is choked with wildlife, especially during the dry season, when animals crowd around the only permanent water source in the area, the Tarangire River. Elephants are the undisputed stars in Tarangire. During the dry season this park has one of the largest concentrations of elephants in the world!

Remote and untamed

Tarangire is one of the lesser known parks, giving it a beautiful authentic rawness. It is still pure and untamed and can be explored in peace and solitude. Particularly the southern part is remote and far away from the crowds. Tarangire is absolutely a breath of fresh air to the safari adventurer.

Kingdom of elephants

Tarangire offers some unrivalled elephant sightings. It shelters one of the largest concentrations of African elephants in the world, with herds of 300 elephants drinking from the river, scratching great holes in the surface and baobab trees. Tarangire also has an remarkable concentration of big cats like lions, cheetahs and leopards. The African wild dog, gazxelle, kudu, oryx and gerenuk, seldom-seen in other parks in the northern circuit. You also may be lucky to spot the tree-climbing python for which the park is famous. During the dry months, the concentration of animals around the Tarangire River is almost as diverse and reliable as in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Silale swamp

The landscape and vegetation of the park is incredibly diverse. The epic baobabs and acacias in the hilly areas are interspersed with large swamps, where you can spot lions and leopards. A beautiful location in the Tarangire National Park is the Silale Swamp. Fed by natural springs it is an oasis of lush green grass all year round. These swamps have the largest selection of breeding birds anywhere in the world. Tarangire counts more than 550 bird species, including the steppe and osprey, marabou, giant heron, white pelican, geese, ibises and the largest flying bird Kori Bustard.

Activities

Game drives, guided walking safaris, day trips to Maasai and Barabaig villages, as well as to the hundreds of ancient rock paintings in the vicinity of Kolo on the Dodoma Road.

Best time to visit

Beautiful during both the wet and dry seasons, Tarangire is an excellent year round park for game viewing. Between June and October when the wildlife is at its most concentrated, the park offers particularly good wildlife viewing conditions.
