SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Serengeti National Park, often referred to as the “Endless Plains,” is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, vast open landscapes, and the awe-inspiring sight of millions of wildebeest racing across the savannah. Home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa and a stunning array of landscapes, it’s easy to see why the Serengeti is Africa’s most iconic park. Prepare to be captivated by the unparalleled natural beauty of this African treasure

Great Wildebeest Migration

Serengeti National Park and its surrounding areas host one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles. Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embark on an epic journey across the plains in search of fresher grazing grounds. Their circular migration spans about 2,900 km (1,900 miles), moving in a clockwise direction. One of the most thrilling moments of this Great Migration is the dramatic Mara River crossing, where the game viewing reaches its peak in intensity. Away from the riverbanks, the sight of thousands of hooves pounding the earth, kicking up massive clouds of red dust while being pursued by iconic predators, is equally thrilling. It’s not uncommon to witness a kill in action during this time. The wildebeest migration is undoubtedly one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring natural events.

Africa’s Big Five

For many safari-goers in Africa, encountering the Big Five is a must—these legendary animals include the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino, known for their power and the challenge they pose to hunters. If you’re aiming to spot all five in one place, the Serengeti is an outstanding choice. The park is home to Africa’s largest lion population, with around 4,000 lions, drawn by the abundance of prey such as wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and buffalo. In addition, with around 1,000 leopards prowling its vast expanses, the Serengeti offers unparalleled opportunities for wildlife sightings. The park’s extraordinary diversity of animals and ecosystems makes it one of the most remarkable safari destinations in Africa.

Variety of landscapes

Serengeti National Park features diverse landscapes, including open grasslands in the south, acacia-dotted savannah in the center, hilly grasslands in the north, and woodlands and clay plains to the west. It also contains small rivers, lakes, and swamps, each supporting unique wildlife. Covering 14,800 square kilometers, the park offers a variety of ecosystems to explore.

Activities

For a truly unique experience, consider a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti, offering breathtaking aerial views of the wildlife and landscapes. You can also explore Maasai rock paintings, visit the nearby Ngorongoro Crater, or delve into the history at Olduvai Gorge. For an adventure off the beaten path, trek up Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano, or visit Lake Natron, where flamingos gather in large numbers. Each of these attractions provides a different perspective on the region’s natural and cultural wonders.

Best time to visit

The wildebeest migration in the Serengeti follows a 12-month cycle, beginning in January in the southern Serengeti and continuing through to December when the cycle starts anew. The best time to witness the migration is from December to July, with the most dramatic river crossings occurring between June and August. If you’re keen to see thousands of calves being born, the period from January to March is ideal.

A Key Note!

A hot air balloon ride at dawn offers the perfect way to experience the Serengeti’s beauty, with stunning views of wildlife and the sunrise over the plains. After the flight, enjoy a glass of champagne and a delicious English breakfast.
